Today, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the appointments of JoAnne Buth, Norman Doyle, Ghislain Maltais, Dr. Asha Seth, Betty Unger and Vernon White to the Senate. The Prime Minister also announced the intention to appoint Jean-Guy Dagenais.

  • These new senators support our commitment to make the Senate more democratic, accountable and representative of Canadians – including our legislation to limit Senate terms.
  • They will also work hard on our Government’s top priority – jobs and growth – working towards a strong economic recovery, as well safer communities across the country.
  • We call on the provinces to follow Alberta's lead and start electing their Senate representatives.
  • This marks the first time a female elected Senator – Betty Unger – has been appointed to the Senate, as well as the first time two elected Senators will be sitting at once – Mrs. Unger and Bert Brown.
